In an incredibly short period of time, the terms podcast and podcasting have rocketed to the forefront of everything media related. Its almost like everywhere you look or turn these days, virtually anywhere online, a newspaper, television, radios or even your neighbours (assuming your neighbours aren’t past retirement age) it seems like everybody and anybody seems to be talking about podcasting or even downloading or making podcasts.
If you’re new to podcasting then its probably easiest to think of them as radio broadcast or show that can be delivered to your computer or ipod. Podcasts come in various formats and often consist of episodes released on a regular basis like news or sports reports for instance or more often are one off podcasts like a music video for instance. The main difference between podcasting and radio is the range of choice you have with podcasts. With the radio you are limited by what the radio station wants to broadcast whereas the beauty of podcasts is that you can get online do some searching and find what you want to listen to.
Not only can you choose what you want to listen to with podcasting but also unlike the radio you can choose exactly when you want to listen to it too. Another advantage of podcasts which is really cool is that you can actually subscribe to your favourite shows or items which are then delivered to your computer or laptop. You can then choose to listen to them straight away or save them for later just as you would with your tivo at home. In much the same way as websites seem to appear everywhere at a rapid rate podcasts too are on the increase and there is an obvious correlation betwwen the two.

Obviously as more and more people venture online and especially create their own websites then the bigger the market is for people to make and take part in podcasting. This is especially relevant as the technology behind podcasting is relatively simple and can be learned very easily. Because of this all kinds of people are distributing podcasts and indeed it has become especially prevalent in the online marketing and affiliate marketing business.
Podcasts provide the ordinary man or woman in the streets an outlet to distribute all kind of information of their own and in much the same way as blogs did have given the ordinary people a chance to compete with bigger companies and corporations.
